Bilateral Stimulation Therapy (BLST) is a neuropsychological intervention derived from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a treatment recognized by the World Health Organization as an evidence-based approach for trauma-related disorders. EMDR incorporates bilateral stimulation as a core component, which BLST adapts for more accessible application.
Bilateral stimulation involves engaging both hemispheres of the brain through stimuli such as eye movements, auditory signals, or tactile sensations. Typically, this includes moving the eyes from side to side, following a visual target, or alternating sounds between ears. This method is characterized as a ‘bottom-up’ approach, targeting the limbic system—the emotional center of the brain—to reduce distress. Consequently, this facilitates increased activity in the cortical regions responsible for higher-order functions like reasoning and planning. Therapists often observe that the effects of BLST can manifest more rapidly and with less complexity compared to full EMDR sessions.
